The article I read for this week was “ How does social media affect your body? ” by Psychcentral. This article has a lot of interesting and realistic information. The author discusses both the advantages and disadvantages of social media's influence on society. People's desire to look like filters or their insecurity with their appearance on social media have both been influenced by social media. This article explains how cyberbullying has become a trend in society and at least 59% of people have been cyberbullied. People have also adopted unrealistic ideals caused by Social media. Many people want to look like snap chat and Instagram filters. They also have asked their plastic surgeons to make them look like how they look on the filters. People seek to achieve these unattainable beauty standards. Social media has exacerbated many people's fears and caused significant issues in society. These unrealistic standards can create toxic competition and comparison among people. The article says that “ Social media can make just about anyone feel like they don’t measure up, but it’s even more detrimental for people with eating or body-image disorders, such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). According to the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF), this is a serious condition affecting about one in 50 people in the United States.” Social media has worsened these issues in society. People care too much about how they look on Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, etc. However, Social media has helped with some body positivity. People all of sizes, appearances, and colors have tried to show more self-love on social media. People should be encouraged to exercise and work to improve their mental and physical health through social media. Social media can serve as a way to get propaganda out there for people to better their nutrition and try to their best to be healthy. Social media has become toxic with people just caring about superficial appearances. People are too concerned about how people view them on social media and what they say about them. People should use social media to practice self-love and boost their self-esteem.
